Description
Common thistle plant (Dipsacaceae) encased in ice
The common thistle is one of the Teasel Family members. It is also known under the following names: Dipsacus sylvestris, card teasel, card-thistle, barber's brush, brushes and combs, church broom, gypsy-combs, Venus' basin, Venus'-cup, wild teasel. Common thistle grows around marshes, pastures, abandoned fields, roadsides, railroads, and waste areas. The species prefers damp, coarse and fertile soils.
Common thistle originates in Europe and was imported sometime ago into North America, possibly as an ornamental or more likely because the dried flowers were used in wool production. At this time, common thistle can be found areas in the northeastern U.S., southern Canada, and the Pacific Coast.
I photographed this beautiful glassy-looking specimen in a nearby marsh just before Christmas 2013 when we had the really bad ice storm wreaking a havoc through many parts of southern Ontario.

This is so beautiful, I love how the light is catching the ice and making it glisten!
