Description
Canadian boreal rhinoceros / Rhinoceros Canadensis
The Canadian boreal rhinoceros is a rare and endangered rhino species, now found only in the southern parts of Ontario boreal forests.
Slightly smaller than their African cousins, they eat mainly leafy material, although they have the ability to stand on their hind legs and devour the juicy tops of oak and maple trees.
The rhinoceros used to migrate for the winter to the southern parts of USA, but due to the recent climate changes and ever increasing medical insurance costs, now they just take over the old bear dens and hibernate till spring. The males grow a heavy fur coat which they shed before the spring mating. This strange habit makes it sometimes difficult to distinguish a furry rhino from a grizzly (Ursus arctos horribilis). Compared to bears, the rhinos are characterized by their large size (one of the biggest animals roaming Canadian woods) but relatively small brains for mammals this size (400-600 g) and two horns. In the rhino rutting season, usually around July 1 Canada Day, they can get very dangerous and totally unpredictable, so if you ever encounter them on foot, try to get at least few pictures of them, while you are still at a safe distance.

As a matter of fact, I photographed this scene on July 1st. It was cloudy after some rain, so the vegetation was quite lush, and the colours were nicely saturated. I didn't have to make any changes to the image, just added one element for overall balance. As to the parrot, that's a good idea, they like to swoop down on those old tree stumps, next time I'll keep my eyes open. I'll get it one way or another.
